When IPTV video stutters, freezes or keeps buffering, the first thought is often that the internet connection is poor. But that is not always the case. In practice, complaints about internet quality often show that the problem mainly occurs when people are watching television through an IPTV app or IPTV box.
IPTV can be used in different ways: through an app on a smart TV, an Android box, a Fire Stick or a similar device. For the user, the problem looks the same: the video buffers or freezes. It may then seem logical to conclude that the internet is not working properly. Yet that does not necessarily have to be the cause.
IPTV often runs through servers outside your provider’s control
An IPTV app or IPTV box usually connects to a server that is not hosted by your local internet provider, but by or through the provider of the streaming service. That server therefore falls outside your internet provider’s control. If it is slow, overloaded or unstable, the video may start buffering while your own internet connection is otherwise working normally.
This can happen especially during peak hours, for example between 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM and between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM, when many people are watching at the same time. If the server used by the IPTV service cannot handle the demand, this can lead to stuttering video, buffering or delays. Your local provider generally has no control over this.
What can you check yourself?
Before submitting an internet complaint, it is useful to carry out a few simple checks first:
- Test another device: Open a website or app on another device, such as your phone or laptop. If it works normally, your general internet connection is likely functioning properly.
- Check the channels: Check within the IPTV app whether the issue occurs on all channels or only on one specific channel. If only one channel stutters or buffers, this points more towards an issue with the service itself than with your internet connection.
- Check the modem: Are the cables properly connected and are the status lights on as normal? Reset the modem if necessary and check whether that makes a difference.
When could it be your internet connection?
In some cases, the cause may be your internet connection or home network. This can happen when many devices or applications use the same connection at the same time, such as phones, TVs, video calls, downloads or online gaming.
A weak Wi-Fi signal, an unfavorably placed modem, poor cabling or an unstable connection can also affect video quality.
If other websites, apps or devices are also slow, this may point to a broader issue with the internet connection. The RAC speed test can help you check this.
Not every IPTV service offers the same level of certainty
There is a difference between an official IPTV service offered by a provider and an IPTV service where it is unclear who the provider is, what quality agreements apply or which servers the service depends on.
With an official service from your provider, you have a contractual relationship with that provider. This gives you a clearer basis for referring to the terms and conditions of that service. With unofficial IPTV services, this is often less clear. There may be no fixed quality guarantee, no clear point of contact and no local party that can be held responsible if the service stutters, buffers or stops working.
That is why it is important to be aware of which IPTV service you are using, who the provider is and whether there are clear agreements on quality, support and outages.
When can RAC help you with a complaint?
If your own checks show that the internet is slow throughout your home and that other websites or apps are also not loading properly, this may be an internet quality complaint. First report this in writing to your provider. If you and your provider are unable to resolve the matter, you can then file a formal complaint with RAC.
If your internet otherwise works normally, but only the IPTV app or one specific channel is buffering, the cause is probably related to the server used by the IPTV service itself. Because your provider and RAC have no control over that, this falls outside mediation as an internet quality complaint.
Buffering on an IPTV app or IPTV box therefore does not automatically mean that your internet provider is not delivering what was agreed.
